The IDOLCAM 4th Axis began in 2017, when founder Jason Lam was working as a fashion photographer in New York. Intimidated by the bulk and cost of steadicams, dollies, and cranes, he began experimenting by building a mini steadicam-style spring arm — a 4th-axis stabilizer — for a GoPro. The footage became incredibly smooth, but the GoPro lacked interchangeable lenses.
That vision became IDOLCAM — a tiny camera designed to include interchangeable lenses, interchangeable lighting, a built-in 3-axis gimbal, a flip screen, and a shotgun microphone, all in one compact device. It took more than three years to perfect, but launching during the pandemic forced the project off course.
